Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

Are you scared or nervous about getting dental work done? Don’t be embarrassed; there are many people just like you. If going to your Richmond dentist causes you an unbearable amount of anxiety, that doesn’t mean you need to avoid your appointments altogether. As the top cosmetic dentist in Richmond, VA, we provide dental sedation to help you feel more comfortable during your appointment. Whether you’re getting cosmetic dental work done or just getting your teeth cleaned, sedation dentistry can help.

So, what exactly is sedation dentistry? Simply put, it’s the process of putting you at ease through the use of sedative drugs. This process is safe for both adults and kids. There are a few different ways we administer sedatives, including:

  • Inhaled Sedation: Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a gas that helps you relax. You typically breathe it through a mask on your nose, usually combined with oxygen. The gas has minimal effect and can wear off quickly. Since it’s a very light sedative, you’ll be able to drive yourself home after your appointment.
  • Oral Sedation: This type of sedation comes in the form of a pill you swallow. This drug is usually Halcion, which is closely related to Valium. You’ll typically take the pill an hour before the procedure. Oral sedation typically makes you a little drowsy, so you’ll likely need assistance driving home after your appointment.
  • IV Sedation: IV sedation is typically much stronger than laughing gas or oral sedatives. The sedative drug is administered directly into your vein through an IV, and the effect takes place much faster. This method of sedation also allows us to continually adjust the level of sedation you get throughout the procedure.

If you’re worried about your next dental appointment, don’t hesitate to ask about sedation dentistry. Don’t let your dental health take a hit because you’re nervous about seeing us! We’ll take great care of you and your needs, no matter the level of your anxiety of fear.
